Dementia Services

The diagnosis of Alzheimer's or dementia can be devastating to both the client and his/her loved ones. Art therapy is a unique process allowing clients a way to connect and communicate, often for the duration of their lives. The work focuses on quality of life. In the face of losing so much, clients gain something new in art therapy.

Clients can:

  • develop non-verbal forms of expression

  • engage in a deeply soothing and organizing activity

  • enjoy a sense of self-agency

  • maintain their dignity and pride

  • develop a new ability and interest

Art therapy offers a flexible structure to meet individual needs.

Particular "stage" designations have little impact on engagement and response. It provides sensory stimulation, makes use of muscle memory, and accesses the emotional brain.
